This painting by Vincent van Gogh rural scene showing a goatherd tending animals in an open landscape. The earthy palette and simple subject reflect his early Dutch period when he focused on peasant life and labor. Van Gogh sought to capture the dignity of rural workers.
Before his move to Paris and discovery of bright color, Van Gogh painted in somber tones influenced by the Hague School and Millet. This work shows his early commitment to depicting working people. The painting remains in a private collection.
