by Caravaggio
Caravaggio composed this Rest on the Flight into Egypt around 1597, depicting the Holy Family's pause during their escape to Egypt. Joseph holds sheet music for an angel who plays violin while Mary and the infant Jesus sleep. The composition divides into two halves: a lush, green landscape on the right and a barren, rocky terrain on the left.
This early work shows Caravaggio before he fully developed his dramatic chiaroscuro technique. The angel, painted from a live model, displays the naturalism that would define his career. The painting now hangs at the Galleria Doria Pamphilj in Rome.
