by Claude Monet
French artist Claude Monet painted this view of Rouen Cathedral's west portal as part of his famous series (1892-94). The Gothic facade dissolves into shimmering light and color, solid stone transformed into atmospheric effects. Monet painted over 30 canvases of the cathedral at different times of day.
The cathedral series represented Monet's mature Impressionist approach, using architecture as a screen for studying changing light. Now at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
