Renaissance master Titian (c. 1488-1576) dominated Venetian painting for six decades and shaped the course of European art. Born Tiziano Vecellio in the mountain village of Pieve di Cadore in the Alps north of Venice, he came to the city as a boy and trained under Giovanni Bellini, the leading Venetian painter of his day. By 1516 he held the position of official painter to the Venetian Republic, a role he kept for sixty years. His early work established the Venetian style: rich colors applied in loose, visible brushstrokes, with less emphasis on precise drawing than Florentine contemporaries. The Assumption of the Virgin (1516-1518), painted for the Frari church in Venice, announced his mastery with its dynamic composition and bold use of red and gold.
Titian painted for popes, emperors, and kings throughout his career. Emperor Charles V made him a Count Palatine in 1533, an honor rarely granted to artists. He served both Charles and his son Philip II of Spain, producing mythological scenes, portraits, and religious works for the Spanish court that influenced painters for centuries. His Venus of Urbino (1538) remains one of art history's most discussed nudes, its frank sensuality in a domestic setting influencing painters from Velázquez to Manet. In his final decades, Titian's brushwork grew even freer, applying paint with fingers as much as brushes. This late style anticipated Impressionist techniques that wouldn't resurface for three centuries. He died in Venice during a plague outbreak at around 88 years old, leaving behind an enormous body of work. The Uffizi Gallery holds the Venus of Urbino, while the Prado has one of the world's richest Titian collections.
