The Galleria Borghese occupies a 17th-century villa built for Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V. The cardinal assembled one of Rome's greatest art collections through patronage, purchase, and outright confiscation from other collectors. He recognized Bernini's genius early and commissioned sculptural groups that remain in the villa, while seizing works by Caravaggio from the studio of Cavalier d'Arpino.
Bernini's sculptures anchor the ground floor: Apollo and Daphne captures the moment of transformation in marble, while David shows the young hero mid-throw. Upstairs, Caravaggio's paintings include Young Sick Bacchus and Boy with a Basket of Fruit. Raphael's Deposition and works by Titian fill the picture galleries. Reservations are required for timed entry, limiting crowds in the intimate villa rooms.
