Ancient Greek sculpture spans roughly a thousand years, from the geometric Kouros figures of the 7th century BC to the dramatic compositions of the Hellenistic period. No other sculptural tradition has shaped Western art so fundamentally. The Greeks didn't just carve stone. They invented the idea that sculpture should capture the human body in motion, with accurate anatomy and emotional weight.
The progression tells the story. Archaic period (700–480 BC) statues stand stiff and frontal, influenced by Egyptian models. The Classical period (480–323 BC) brought a revolution: sculptors like Praxiteles and Polykleitos developed contrapposto, naturalistic proportions, and idealized beauty. Praxiteles carved the first life-size female nude, the Aphrodite of Knidos. The Hellenistic period (323–31 BC) pushed further into drama and realism with works like the Laocoön Group and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. These ideals directly shaped the Renaissance and Neoclassicism movements millennia later.
Most original Greek bronzes were melted down centuries ago. What survives are primarily marble works and Roman copies. Major collections exist at the British Museum (including the Parthenon Marbles), the Louvre, and the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Greek sculptural principles, particularly the pursuit of ideal human form, remain the foundation of Western figurative art.
