by Sebastiano del Piombo, 1519
Sebastiano del Piombo created this monumental altarpiece in 1519, depicting Christ raising Lazarus from the dead. The massive canvas (381 × 289.6 cm) shows Lazarus emerging from his tomb while onlookers react with amazement and fear. Michelangelo provided drawings for the figure of Lazarus.
The painting was commissioned to rival Raphael's Transfiguration. Sebastiano's Venetian color combined with Michelangelo's Renaissance draftsmanship created a powerful synthesis. Now at the National Gallery in London.
