by Michelangelo
Michelangelo sculpted this marble figure of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, early in his career. The sculpture shows the god in a drunken pose, a rare humorous subject for the artist known for heroic figures.
This was one of Michelangelo's first major commissions after arriving in Rome. It stands at the Bargello in Florence.
