by Claude Monet, 1891
Finished in 1891, view of haystacks in the frosty fields near Giverny during the winter of 1890-1891. The setting sun bathes the haystacks in warm orange and pink light, contrasting with the cool blue shadows on the snow. This is one of approximately 25 paintings in Monet's celebrated Haystacks series.
Monet worked on multiple canvases simultaneously, switching between them as the light changed throughout the day. He became obsessed with capturing how the same subject could look completely different under varying atmospheric conditions. The series was a critical and commercial success, helping establish Monet's reputation as the leader of Impressionism.
