Guercino painted this meditation on mortality titled Et in Arcadia Ego. Two shepherds discover a skull with the inscription meaning "Even in Arcadia, I (Death) am present." The 1618 work measures 78 × 89 cm in oil on canvas.
This painting introduced the famous phrase to art. Poussin later created his own version of the memento mori theme. This work hangs at Palazzo Barberini in Rome.
