Max Kalish (1891-1945) was a Lithuanian-born American sculptor who became known for his bronze figures of American laborers. Born in Vashki, Lithuania, he immigrated to Cleveland as a child and studied at the Cleveland School of Art and the National Academy of Design in New York.
Kalish's sympathetic portrayals of steel workers, miners, and factory laborers document early 20th-century American industrial life with both dignity and social awareness.
