Jonathan Borofsky (born 1942) is an American sculptor and installation artist known for his large-scale public works, especially the Hammering Man series: motorized black steel silhouettes of a worker swinging a hammer, installed in cities from Seattle to Frankfurt to Seoul.
Born in Boston and educated at Carnegie Mellon and Yale, Borofsky emerged in the late 1970s with immersive gallery installations combining painted figures, sound, and projected imagery. His public sculptures typically feature simplified human silhouettes at monumental scale, addressing themes of labor, community, and human aspiration. The 48-foot Hammering Man in Seattle has become a city landmark.
