Jan Gossaert (c. 1478-1532), also known as Mabuse, was a Netherlandish painter who became one of the first Northern European artists to integrate Italian Renaissance forms into Flemish painting. After traveling to Italy in 1508-09 with his patron Philip of Burgundy, he introduced classical mythological subjects and Italianate architecture into his work.
Gossaert's paintings combine meticulous Flemish detail with Renaissance nude figures and classical settings. His Neptune and Amphitrite and Danaë were among the first full-scale mythological nudes in Northern European painting, opening a path that later Flemish masters would follow.
