Francesco Bertos (c. 1678-1741) was an Italian sculptor who worked in Padua and Venice, known for his technically astonishing bronze sculptural groups featuring dozens of intertwined figures. Born in Rome, he moved to the Veneto and worked under the patronage of noble Venetian families.
Bertos' signature works are tall, spiraling compositions of mythological or allegorical figures piled atop one another in pyramidal arrangements. These tour-de-force bronzes, sometimes containing 20 or more figures, demonstrate extraordinary casting skill. They were popular as decorative pieces for aristocratic collections. His work bridges the late Baroque and early Rococo periods in northern Italian sculpture.
