Bernt Notke (c. 1435-1509) was a German-Baltic painter and sculptor who created some of the most dramatic works of Late Gothic art in Northern Europe. Based in Lübeck, he worked across the Baltic region for churches and civic patrons.
His masterwork is the monumental St. George and the Dragon (1489) in Stockholm's Storkyrkan cathedral, a life-sized group combining carved wood, elk antler, and real mounted horsehair. His Dance of Death painting (partly surviving in Tallinn) is one of the most important medieval depictions of the theme.
