Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershoi painted this Artemis between 1893 and 1894, a rare mythological subject from an artist best known for quiet interior scenes. The large canvas measures 193 by 251.5 centimeters, showing the goddess of the hunt in Hammershoi's characteristic muted palette of grays and browns.
Hammershoi's distinctive style avoided bright colors and dramatic action. Even depicting the goddess Artemis, he maintained his subdued approach. The painting stands apart from his typical domestic interiors but shares their contemplative atmosphere and careful attention to light and shadow.
The work hangs at the National Gallery of Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst) in Copenhagen. Hammershoi (1864-1916) remained little known outside Denmark during his lifetime but has gained international recognition since major exhibitions in the 2000s revealed his unique poetic vision to wider audiences.
