Thomas Gainsborough completed this early landscape of Cornard Wood in his native Suffolk with naturalistic observation influenced by Dutch landscape painting. The composition captures the English countryside with fresh, direct vision.
This is among Gainsborough's earliest major landscapes, showing his talent before he focused primarily on portraits. It hangs at the National Gallery in London.
