Thomas Gainsborough completed this view of woodland near his birthplace of Sudbury in Suffolk. The English painter loved landscapes but made his living primarily from portraits. This early work shows his direct observation of the English countryside.
Gainsborough's landscapes often feature rustic figures and winding paths through dense foliage. This painting hangs at the National Gallery in London.
