by Damien Hirst, 1991
Damien Hirst's The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991) suspends a 14-foot tiger shark in formaldehyde. The work confronts viewers with death while questioning whether preserved flesh constitutes life or death.
Collector Charles Saatchi commissioned the work for £50,000. The original shark deteriorated and was replaced in 2006. Critics debated whether a replaced shark was the same artwork. Hedge fund manager Steven Cohen purchased it for reportedly $8 million. It exemplifies the Young British Artists movement's provocative approach. While often associated with Tate, the original is in private collection.
Luxury wall art with the same mood and energy. Gallery-quality canvas, no museum crowds.
