by Parmigianino
This painting by Parmigianino Mannerist study around 1523-1524, during his early twenties. The composition brings together the Holy Family with humble shepherds and heavenly angels, blending the earthly and divine in a single scene. His elegant, elongated figures hint at the distinctive style he would later perfect.
Born Francesco Mazzola in Parma, the artist earned his nickname from his hometown. This sketch dates from the same period as his famous "Self-portrait in a Convex Mirror" (1524) and other religious works exploring flight-to-Egypt themes. The young artist was already developing the refined grace that would make him a leader of Italian Mannerism.
Currently in a private collection, this piece shows Parmigianino's skill in rendering spiritual subjects with technical elegance and emotional warmth.
