Edwin Landseer completed this dramatic Scottish landscape capturing the aftermath of a storm over a Highland lake. Dark clouds break to reveal patches of light, while the water reflects the turbulent sky. The composition demonstrates Landseer's ability to convey atmosphere and mood through landscape.
Though best known for his animal paintings, Landseer frequently depicted the Scottish Highlands, which he visited regularly from the 1820s onward. Queen Victoria particularly admired his Scottish subjects. This work shows his Romantic sensibility, emphasizing nature's power and drama. It's now at Tate in London.
