The MAK (Museum of Applied Arts) in Vienna was founded in 1863 as the Imperial Royal Austrian Museum of Art and Industry, modeled on London's South Kensington Museum (now the V&A). It was Austria's first museum dedicated to applied and decorative arts.
The collection covers furniture, textiles, glass, ceramics, metalwork, and design from the Middle Ages to the present. The Vienna Secession and Wiener Werkstätte holdings, including Klimt's preparatory drawings for the Stoclet Frieze, are a particular strength. In the 1990s, contemporary artists were invited to redesign individual galleries, creating an unusual dialogue between historic objects and contemporary installation.
