Hans Memling (c. 1430–1494) became one of the most successful and prolific painters of the Early Netherlandish school. Born in Seligenstadt near Frankfurt, Germany, his parents probably died in the plague of 1450. He apparently trained first in Cologne, then traveled to the Netherlands around 1455–60, where he likely worked in the workshop of Rogier van der Weyden in Brussels. Seven months after Rogier's death in 1464, Memling purchased citizenship in Bruges and established his own workshop.
Bruges was then a thriving center of international trade, and Memling found wealthy patrons among Italian bankers, Hanseatic merchants, and Burgundian nobility. Within a few years he was receiving major commissions. His 1467 Last Judgment, ordered by the Florentine Angelo Tani, was captured by a Hanseatic privateer and ended up in Gdańsk. His work draws on Rogier van der Weyden, Robert Campin, and Jan van Eyck, but where Rogier heightened emotional drama, Memling painted with a placid serenity. His portraits pioneered detailed landscape backgrounds, creating a harmonious counterpoint between sitter and setting.
By 1480 Memling owned a large stone house and ranked among Bruges' wealthiest citizens. His most celebrated work, the gilded Shrine of St. Ursula, was commissioned by two nuns for the Hospital of St. John, where it remains today. The Groeningemuseum in Bruges holds the largest collection of his work. Other paintings hang at the National Gallery in London, the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He died in 1494, and his portrait style influenced Italian painters including Raphael.
