This 14th-century bronze from Nepal depicts a tantric goddess and her spouse in yab-yum (father-mother) embrace. This imagery represents the primordial union of wisdom and compassion necessary to overcome false duality and achieve enlightenment. The male figure embodies compassion and skillful means (upaya), while the female represents transcendent wisdom (prajna). Together they symbolize non-duality: the dissolution of opposites.
These images were created for practitioners who had received proper tantric initiation and instruction. The yab-yum form belongs to Anuttarayoga tantra, the highest level of tantric practice in Tibetan Buddhism. At about 6 by 4 inches, this was used in personal meditation. It's at the Art Institute of Chicago.
Luxury wall art with the same mood and energy. Gallery-quality canvas, no museum crowds.
