Lawrence Alma-Tadema rendered this scene from Goethe's Faust showing the scholar's seduction of innocent Marguerite. Though known for classical subjects, Alma-Tadema brought his detailed technique to this romantic tragedy.
The story of Faust's damnation and Marguerite's fall was a popular subject in 19th-century art. This work remains in a private collection.
