by Bronzino
Italian artist Bronzino painted this portrait of the young Guidubaldo della Rovere in 1531-1532, when the nobleman was just eighteen. The future Duke of Urbino is shown in splendid Milanese armor with gold decoration, his hand resting on a helmet inscribed in Greek: "It will certainly be as I have decided." The assertive motto reflects Guidubaldo's conflict with his father over an arranged marriage.
Bronzino was working on decorations at the Villa Imperiale when he received this commission. According to Vasari, the portrait was delayed because Guidubaldo insisted on waiting for a new suit of armor ordered from Lombardy. The experience proved key for Bronzino's career, establishing his reputation as a master of aristocratic portraiture in the Mannerist style.
The painting now hangs at Palazzo Pitti in Florence. At the della Rovere court, Bronzino encountered Castiglione's influential "Il Cortegiano," which shaped his understanding of how to translate courtly ideals into visual form.
