Italian artist Andrea del Sarto painted this fresco in 1510 for the Chiostro dei Voti (Cloister of the Vows) at the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata in Florence. The large fresco measures 360 x 300 cm and depicts San Filippo Benizzi punishing gamblers and blasphemers within a fantastic landscape.
Del Sarto created seven frescoes in the atrium, five illustrating the life and miracles of the Servite saint who died in 1285. This scene uses different tones to create the opening of the heavens and destruction on earth. A faint orange lightning bolt breaks a tree against thick black and purple clouds. Now at the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata in Florence.
